Gabriel Ballinas: From Albany State to an American football league in Mexico
Albany State University (ASU) alumnus Gabriel Ballinas is nearing the end of his first season with the Dinos de Saltillo, an American football team in Mexico’s Liga de Fútbol Americano Profesional.
“Gabe is a genuine young man with an extraordinary passion to succeed. When Gabe came to ASU, we knew instantly that he was set on becoming a professional kicker. He was a key component to ASU’s success on the field and exceeded all expectations. We are so proud of him,” said ASU Assistant Football Coach, Anthony Kelly.
Ballinas graduated from ASU in 2021 with a Bachelor of Science in Management. While enrolled, he played as a kicker/punter on the Golden Rams football team.
“ASU has been one of the best decisions I have made in my life! It was amazing to be
hundreds of miles away from my hometown and still feel at home. ASU not only prepared
me academically, but also showed me a new culture and way to live my life, and a new
family in a different country,” said Ballinas.
In 2022, he was drafted by the Ottawa Redblacks professional Canadian football team based in Ottawa, Ontario. Ballinas was later signed by the Dinos de Saltillo, and finished the season as the top kicker in the league during the regular season having the highest percentage of field goals made and the most points scored by a kicker.
“Playing for the Dinos has been simply fantastic. The league has many players with talent, which makes it super fun. It has helped me to keep my dream of playing on the biggest stage on the planet, the NFL. And more than anything, the proximity to my hometown, Monterrey, Mexico, has allowed me to have my family in the stands. This is one of the best feelings for an athlete,” added Ballinas.
The team will play in the championship game taking place in June.
