According to a wage and vacancy survey done by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) in 2011, the vacancy rate for histotechnicians was approximately 10%. This correlates to literally hundreds if not thousands of jobs available nationwide. And with only an average of one histotechnology school per every two states each graduate can expect to have multiple opportunities from which to choose.

The average starting salary for a graduate is approximately $31,000. This applies to both the certificate and associate degree routes. For those graduates who wish to pursue a managerial or supervisory track the starting salary for a histotechnology supervisor is $51,000.

Besides being a bench tech or supervisor histotechnicians can also pursue other avenues related to the field including sales for both products and equipment companies, traveling technician, teaching and advanced degree options including histotechnologist and pathologist’s assistant.
