ALBANY, Ga. – Music students and music professionals throughout the South attended the College Music Society 2018 Southern Regional Conference hosted by Albany State University (ASU) from Feb.
22 – Feb. 24
The event included presentations and performances from across the spectrum of music
in the academy. College professors, professional musicians, composers, conductors
and students participated.
“The music conference was an eye opening experience,” said Maya Broadwater, a music
education major. “I met a plethora of music educators from Florida, Alabama and Georgia.
I was able to network and discover the different studies that the music programs at
their respective universities had to offer. As a future music educator, I realized
there are a variety of paths that people in my field can embark on.”
The conference’s keynote address, titled “Transforming Lives through the Power of
Diversity in the Arts,” included presentations by Andre Dowell, chief programming
officer of the Sphinx Organization, and Hannah White, a 17-year-old violin virtuoso
and composer.
Dowell lead participants in a bold conversation about the important role diversity
plays in the arts, arts education and arts leadership. Participants learned strategies
to cultivate positive changes within organizations. The session guided participants
in engaging others in meaningful conversations about the value of diversity and how
it can impact the lives of students.
“My experience with the music conference was enriching,” said Davin Tennie-Jones,
a music education major. I learned about the different styles of teaching from various
professors and universities.”
A consortium of college, conservatory, university and independent musicians and scholars
interested in all disciplines of music, the College Music Society provides leadership
and serves as an agent of change by addressing concerns facing music in higher education.
