Albany State MARC Scholars continue their education at top research institutions

Several ASU graduates have continued their education at top research institutions around the country. Many of those students were in the National Institutes of Health funded MARC (Maximizing Access to Research Careers) program which supports students who are pursuing Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D. programs and careers in the biomedical field. MARC provides the highest stipend at the undergraduate level.

	Alexius Lampkin was a forensic science major who was accepted at six major universities. Alexius decided to join the Ph.D. program in molecular and cellular pharmacology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Lampkin is the recipient of the Graduate Research Scholar (GRS) Fellowship, which comes from the State of Wisconsin’s Advanced Opportunity Program and Wisconsin–Madison’s Graduate School. Dr. Amir Sahib, professor of chemistry was her research mentor at ASU.
	Victoria Stephens was a forensic science major who joined the University of Iowa and completed the Post Baccalaureate program. Stephens was accepted at three major universities and joined the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. program at the Vanderbilt University of Medicine. She is a recipient of the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) scholarship. Dr. Ghislain Mandouma, professor of chemistry, and Dr. Oluseyi Vanderpuye, professor of forensic science, were her research mentors at ASU.
	Amanda Holloman was a computer science major and joined the Ph.D. program in computer science at the University of Alabama. She received the prestigious Bridge to the Doctorate Fellowship sponsored by the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation and the National Science Foundation. Her Ph.D. will focus on the applications of computer-based programming on the treatment of neurological disorders. Dr. Sayed Roosta and Dr. Robert Owor were her mentors at ASU.
	Briana Toatley was a biology major who joined the MD program at the Morehouse School of Medicine. She mastered several cell culture techniques and skills. Toatley was accepted into three summer internship programs and decided to go to the Boston University Medical Center. Toatley chose Morehouse School of Medicine for her MD degree. Dr. Jain served as Toatley’s research mentor
	Jaden Hunt was a biology major who joined the master’s program at the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in the Environmental Science program. He is a recipient of graduate assistantship funded through the Department of Energy. His research focuses on bioremediation, especially atomic radiation through microorganisms. Dr. Young Lee, professor of biology, was his research mentor at ASU.
