RN-to-BSN
Application Periods
Acceptance Cohort | Application Period | Classes Begin |
Spring | June 2 - November 1 | January |
Summer | November 2 - April 1 | May |
Fall | January 1 - June 1 | August |
NOTE: It is strongly advised that new applicants apply to the University AT LEAST ONE MONTH PRIOR to submitting an application for the program. This will allow the University time to fully evaluate the student’s application/supporting documentation and perform any necessary transfer articulations.
Background
The RN-to-BSN completion program is designed for students and working professionals who have already attained an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN or ASN) from an accredited program and have subsequently earned their licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) but who ultimately desire to earn their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Students are admitted into this program each semester.
Effective beginning the Spring 2022 semester, the Albany State University’s (ASU) RN-to-BSN program has joined the University System of Georgia’s (USG) eMajor Nurse Collaborative. This arrangement allows our program to collaboratively deliver select courses common to the RN-to-BSN curriculum with 12 other USG institutions. Students will complete the five (5) common courses via USG’s eMajor utilizing their GoVIEW learning management system (LMS), while the remaining five (5) courses will continue to be housed by Albany State University’s GeorgiaVIEW LMS. The nursing courses within this program are taken wholly online, utilizing a combination of the University System of Georgia's (USG) eCampus GoVIEW (Georgia Online Virtual Instruction Enterprise Wide system) and Albany State University's GeorgiaVIEW.
Students with outstanding baccalaureate Core coursework should be aware that these courses may or may not be offered as online and/or eCore courses. Students should contact their advisors and/or the departments in which these courses originate to inquire as to their online availability.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Graduates of ASU's or the former Darton State College’s associate nursing programs (including the Healthcare-Professional-to-RN Bridge) must complete an application for readmission to Albany State University via of Office of Admissions and Recruitment.
Program Format
The RN-to-BSN program is a wholly online program offering both full- and part-time program pathways. Depending on the entry semester and the amount of outstanding baccalaureate Core curriculum, this program can be completed in as few as 2 consecutive semesters.
Please utilize the table below for quick reference as to the courses housed by each LMS:
1 NURS 4497 and NURS 4498 are co-requisite courses and must be taken together during the same term. 2 NURS 4597 and NURS 4598 are co-requisite courses and must be taken together during the same term. |

This program expands on the associate degree curriculum, preparing the BSN graduate
for roles across the life continuum to include leadership, health promotion, disease
prevention, community health, and research.
The registered nurse articulating to the baccalaureate level will be awarded up to 33 semester hours accrued from their previous ASN/ADN degree. These credits will be held in escrow until the baccalaureate candidate successfully completes at least 8 semester hours of nursing credit. Credits held in escrow will then be added to the student’s transcript.
This program culminates with the student earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, which prepares students with the knowledge and clinical skills to function as a beginning nurse, nurse manager, or leader within various healthcare settings. Additionally, our BSN graduates are prepared to enter graduate nursing programs in order to advance their careers, two of which are offered at this institution!
Admission Criteria
Applicants must:
- FIRST, submit an application for admission/readmission to Albany State University and be admitted in good standing.
- AFTER being accepted as a student at Albany State University, submit the completed program application and application fee by the application deadline.
- Be a graduate of an accredited associate nursing degree program.
- Have a current, unrestricted U.S. Registered Nurse license. The new pre-licensed graduate
associate degree nurse may register for the first semester of the RN-to-BSN program.
These are the only nursing courses the pre-licensed associate degree graduate nurse
may take in the nursing major prior to licensure. Please attach a copy of your professional license WITH the admission application.
- After successful completion of 8 semester hours of the RN-to-BSN program, 33 semester hours of equivalent credit for previous nursing courses will be awarded.
- Completion of MATH 2411 (Introduction to Statistics) and two sequential courses in
an Area D science, satisfied only by completion of one of the following course sequences:
- BIOL 1111K and 1112K (Introduction to Biological Sciences sequence)
- BIOL 2107K and 2108K (Principles of Biology sequence)
- CHEM 1151K and 1152K (Survey of Chemistry sequence)
- CHEM 1211K and 1212K (Principles of Chemistry sequence)
- Have a minimum 2.8 (based on a 4.0 scale) overall GPA on all coursework attempted at all institutions attended.
- Applicants must not have been excluded/dismissed from any other nursing program for
any reason, including (but not limited to) academic misconduct, disruptive/unprofessional
behavior, or program failure.
- A student who has failed (D, F, or WF) two (2) nursing courses, whether at a 2-year or 4-year institution (including ASU) will not be eligible for admission or continuation in the nursing program at ASU. Students with no more than two (2) nursing failures may be considered for entry (or reentry) into the nursing program on a case-by-case basis only after a 3-year period has passed from the most recently-earned failure. Only one (1) nursing failure may be forgiven.
- Following admission to the nursing program, students may be required to submit documentation evidencing satisfaction (and/or maintenance)
of the following requirements prior to the established pre-clinical deadline for each
nursing course with a clinical/laboratory component:
- Annual flu vaccinations
- Complete criminal background check and 10-panel drug screening (via PreCheck)
- Students are subjected to compulsory background checks per clinical agency requirements and may also be required to submit to random tests for illegal use of controlled substances as a provision by the law or regulations of the contracting agency. If the site refuses to allow a student to attend clinical experiences, the nursing program is not obligated to find another clinical site, and the student will not be able to complete the nursing program at ASU. Therefore, it is important to conduct personal record checks prior to admission to the nursing program.
- Active health insurance (or enrollment in the Student Health Insurance Plan)
- Immunization record documenting the following: measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, varicella, and any other immunization(s) deemed necessary by the University and/or the clinical site. Hepatitis B vaccination is also recommended for clinical settings but is not required.
- Active malpractice insurance (University-provided)
- Basic life support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers card (must be certified by the American Heart Association)
- Tuberculosis screening
NOTE: While students may indicate their preference on the application, assignment to the full- or part-time RN-to-BSN program pathway is typically contingent upon the amount of baccalaureate Core still outstanding at the time of program admission. Moreover, depending on the semester of intended entry, completion of the RN-to-BSN program within 2 consecutive semesters (the “full-time” pathway) may additionally require the student to submit a “Request for Overload,” especially if the program of study would require Summer semester attendance (which generally reduces the maximum number of credit hours that can be taken in one semester). Students are recommended to contact a program representative to discuss these matters prior to application.
