Dr. Richard Carvajal Named Interim President of Darton State College
University System of Georgia (USG) Chancellor Hank Huckaby today named Dr. Richard Carvajal, president of Bainbridge State College, interim president of Darton State College in Albany.
“Dr. Carvajal has done a tremendous job leading Bainbridge State through incredible change over the last almost five years,” said Huckaby. “We are confident in his ability to lead Darton State, especially through the consolidation process.”
“I am honored and humbled to have been asked to help lead Darton State College through such a historic time,” said Carvajal. “I look forward to working with Darton faculty, staff, students and supporters as we partner with our colleagues at Albany State University to build a new world-class university for southwest Georgia and beyond.”
Carvajal will assume his post on Dec. 16. He will replace Darton State College Interim President Dr. Paul Jones, who has been named president of Fort Valley State University.
Carvajal has served as president of Bainbridge State College since 2011. As president of Bainbridge State, he has led the institution through accreditation reaffirmation, its first capital campaign, a move to state college status and a change in name.
Prior to his presidency at Bainbridge State, Carvajal was vice president for student success services at Cascadia College in Bothell, Wash.
Prior to that, he served as dean of student services at Independence Community College in Kansas from 2003 to 2006. Before that, he was the associate dean of student services at Coker College in Hartsville, S.C., from 1997 to 2003.
Carvajal holds a Ph.D. in educational administration with emphasis in higher education from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, a Master of Science degree in college student personnel administration from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, and a Bachelor of Science in mass communication/sociology from East Central University in Ada, Okla.
