The History of The Center for Faculty Excellence
The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) was formed in 2018 to support the philosophy that the faculty of the University is the foundation of the school and ASU has a moral imperative to support faculty development. To ensure the faculty continues to improve and excel, the CFE provides professional development opportunities to all members of the teaching faculty, including full-time, part-time, and online faculty members. The Center, located in BCB 290, is developing a resource room to provide research and reference materials for faculty members.
It is focused on the strategies that develop and sustain a teaching culture that values and rewards teaching, respects and supports individual differences among learners, and creates learning environments in which diverse students and instructors can excel. The CFE is committed to the support and improvement of evidence-based learning and teaching practices.
Finally, it is governed by specific guiding principles that include providing opportunities for professional development, research, service, and continuous program improvement. The principles include developing communities of learning, supporting innovation in teaching and learning, and helping to continue to develop relationships across disciplines. This has been an exciting year! There have been ongoing changes at ASU, including the formation of The Center for Faculty Excellence. The opportunity to serve as the first Director of this endeavor is an honor and provides a special way to support the ASU faculty. Our faculty represents a diverse group of talented, life-long learners. This group of teacher-scholars have personal and professional goals that are as diverse as the group itself. To meet those diverse needs will be an on-going challenge for The Center, but one we are ready to embrace. The diversity also provides the framework for practicing innovative teaching strategies in a risk-free environment. As professional learning opportunities are planned for each academic year, the goal will always focus on supporting faculty development. Please feel free to come by and visit The Center to review resource materials, share innovative ideas, or just to chat. I look forward to your visit!
