Special Message from the President: October 2020 Update on In-Person Student Homecoming Events
Dear Students,
Yesterday, I shared with you concerns about an incident that occurred at an off-campus site near the ASU East Campus. Out of an abundance of caution and as a result of behaviors off-campus this week, all remaining in-person Homecoming events are cancelled immediately. Our ability to ensure the safety of our campus is inhibited when individuals behave in manners detrimental to the well-being of our campus.
This decision is disappointing to me as I’m sure it is to you, however, it is in the best interest of our campus community. Additionally, as I have said before, students should not attend any off-campus parties that are in Albany or the surrounding areas. These parties, regardless of their location, are not safe and are highly likely to result in harm to you. They are not designed with your safety in mind. Attending these parties also increases your risk of contracting COVID-19, which puts the lives of our campus community in jeopardy and poses a threat of campus closure.
I would also like to thank our student leaders who evaluated these situations quickly and shared their concerns about safety. I agree with you all 100% and I appreciate your leadership. As a reminder, anyone with information about any of these incidents should contact Dr. Terry Lindsay, Vice President for Student Affairs, ASU’s Chief of Police, Gregory Elder or submit information online via our general complaint form; which has the option of anonymous submission.
