You have indeed made the right choice! The New Student Orientation Program is designed to make your transition to the University an easy and pleasant experience. It is a mandatory step for all first-year and first-time students to help the adjustment to college. Participating in the orientation gives you an opportunity to begin learning how to successfully navigate college life and meet the people on campus who are responsible for providing services and instruction as you progress from orientation through to graduation. The earlier you attend an orientation, the more likely you will be to get the classes and the class times that you want. The NSOP is facilitated by first-year advisors, ASU faculty, and student orientation leaders. The Parents’ Orientation is a concurrent orientation that provides an opportunity for parents and families to learn more about ASU faculty, staff and resources. These sessions will include detailed information about the transitional process for ASU students. The orientation allows families of incoming students to interact in a small group setting with campus administrators. Participants will receive orientation information that is vital to supporting their New Rams toward academic and personal success. However, we strongly discourage bringing young children since the Parent Orientation is not designed for young audiences. The orientation for transfer students is specifically designed for students transferring in fewer than 30 transferable semester hours. Although transfer students may be familiar with higher education processes, they may not be as knowledgeable about the processes and programs at Albany State University. However, our staff is available to assist transfer students and to help them transition the University. • Freshman Transfer

A freshman transfer student is one who has earned less than 30 transferable semester hours (45 transferable quarter hours) from another institution. Freshman Transfer students must meet the new freshman admissions requirements.

• Non-Traditional Transfer

A non-traditional transfer student is a student who has been out of high school at least five years and has earned at least 30 transferable semester hours (45 transferable quarter hours) from a previous institution. The minimum transfer GPA is 2.0

• Non-Traditional Freshman Transfer

A non-traditional freshman transfer student is a student who has been out of high school at least five years and earned less than 30 transferable hours. The minimum transfer GPA is 2.0. Additional testing may be required. Admission to the University does not guarantee admission to a specific college or department. Certain programs have additional admission requirements which must be met before a student can begin taking upper-level classes in their degree program. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the appropriate academic department for additional admission requirements upon acceptance to the University granted by the Office of Admissions.

Congratulations on your admission to Albany State University. We are here to support your successful transition and integration into college life. More specifically, we invite students who are over the age of 25, first-time college students, transferring to ASU from another college/university, or returning to the University after a leave of absence. The purpose of this orientation is to prepare students to be academically successful. It will also provide an opportunity to connect with other adult students. If you plan to participate in an on-campus orientation, be sure to register for a scheduled session (dates to be published soon).

Readmitted students may also attend the orientations for non-traditional or transfer students to restart their college careers.

Albany State University offers diverse online programs for undergraduate and graduate students. Information about courses, fees, resources, and technical assistance is available on the Distance Learning homepage (https://www.asurams.edu/distance/) In addition, distance learning support specialists from each discipline are available to answer questions and to assist with the course registration process. The New Student-Athletic Orientation is a concurrent orientation designed to meet with the student-athletes to ensure that they will be successful on and off their field of play. All incoming ASU student-athletes (freshmen and transfers) who are receiving financial aid must attend a New Student-Athletic Orientation in the summer which combines a half-day athletics orientation scheduled in conjunction with ASU summer orientation. Information pertinent to incoming student-athletes is presented and each student-athlete receives academic advising from the Athletics Academic Support staff in addition to participating in the same orientation program that all new ASU students attend.

RAMS Life Skills

The ASU Athletics Department sponsors a CHAMPS/Life Skills program which is designed to support each ASU student-athletes development in five areas: academics, athletics, personal development, career development and community service. The Rams Life Skills is part of the CHAMPS/Life Skills program for ASU student-athletes. It takes place the day before the first day of classes for the fall semester and includes speakers on a variety of topics such as:

• Gambling
• Drugs and alcohol
• Hazing
• Social networking
• Stress management
• Academic Honesty (freshman student-athletes)
• Transitioning to college (freshman student-athletes)

The Graduate School Orientation is the concurrent first step for graduates to be introduced to the university, the graduate community, and the broad range of resources and services available to support your success. You will learn the policies that govern the studies at ASU; you will hear experienced graduate students on a variety of subjects, and the importance of finding a mentor. The Graduate School Dean and program coordinators are available to help. Graduate students are given the opportunity to transition into ASU seamlessly.

Through the many graduate programs offered, our goal is to ensure academic excellence for each student by providing in-depth, quality instruction. Upon graduation, it is our vision that every ASU student gain the skills to compete in a technologically advanced society, have an understanding of ever-changing world events, and adapt to them with an appreciation for the importance of lifelong learning. Being in college and high school ...at the same time, how exciting!

The Dual Enrollment program allows high school students to enroll in college-level courses. The best part is students get credit for college classes AND their equivalent high school course at no cost or very little cost to the student. There is no charge for tuition, mandatory fees, and required books, providing huge cost savings for parents and students. Students can enroll part-time, full-time, online, or on campus classes. Some even graduate with an Associate’s Degree at the same time they graduate from high school. A MANDATORY orientation for all international students will be held.  All International students will be contacted by their International Student Coordinator.  International students are required to bring all documents because immigration check-in will be included in the meeting. All new and returning students must plan ahead to be at this meeting.
